Sound familiar?

These are the symptoms our customers call about. Elite Reliability RV finds the cause behind each one.

Furnace fan runs but blows cold air
Furnace will not light at all
Furnace lights, then shuts off
Heat pump runs but does not heat
Clicking or no sound from the furnace
Burning or gas smell when the heat comes on
Space heater or fireplace trips the breaker
One end of the RV stays cold
Want the RV ready before the first freeze

How we approach this

In this part of Texas the AC runs most of the year and the furnace sits. Then the first cold front comes through, someone flips the thermostat to heat, and the fan blows cold air or nothing happens at all. A furnace that has sat for months usually has a simple reason for it. A wasp or mud dauber nest in the intake or exhaust. A sail switch stuck from dust. Low 12V power, which a furnace needs before it will even try to light. A propane regulator that is not delivering enough gas. We test each of those in order, find the one that is actually stopping it, and leak test the propane side before we call it done. If your RV heats with a heat pump on the roof, we check that too. It is part of the AC unit, and it is the same system we work on all summer.

What we fix

Furnace Blows Cold Air

The fan coming on is only the first step. After that the furnace has to prove airflow, open the gas valve, and light. A stuck sail switch, a bad limit switch, a weak igniter, or low battery voltage stops it partway, and you get a fan with no heat. We test each step to see where it stops.

Furnace Will Not Light or Stay Lit

Insects nesting in the burner tube or exhaust, a dirty burner, a failing control board, or a propane supply problem. We clear and inspect the burner and vents, check gas pressure at the regulator, and test the board before replacing anything.

Suburban and Atwood Furnaces

Most RVs carry a Suburban or an Atwood (Dometic) furnace. We service and repair both, and replace the furnace when it is genuinely finished.

Heat Pump Not Heating

A rooftop heat pump works well down to about 40 degrees, then it cannot pull enough heat from the outside air and the furnace has to take over. If yours will not heat on a mild day, it is usually the reversing valve, the thermostat, or the wiring between them.

Propane Leak Test and Safety Check

Before the heat goes back into service we leak test the propane lines and fittings and check the propane and carbon monoxide detectors. A furnace that runs all night while you sleep has to be right.

Get Your RV Winter Ready

Texas does not freeze often, but when it does it freezes hard. Before the first cold snap we test the furnace, protect the water lines and water heater, check tank heaters and heat tape if you have them, and make sure the batteries can carry the furnace through a cold night. Using it this winter or parking it, we set it up for that.

Electric Heat That Trips Breakers

Space heaters and electric fireplaces pull a lot of power. If they trip the breaker or the park pedestal, the problem is the 120V circuit, and that is electrical work we do every day.

Not a guess.
A diagnosis.

An RV furnace is a short chain of safety checks, and it will not light until every one of them passes. Power, airflow, temperature, gas, and flame all have to be right in order. Elite Reliability RV was founded by an engineer with nearly 20 years in oil and gas, so we test that chain one link at a time instead of throwing a control board at it. Most furnaces that will not heat need a part that costs far less than the furnace.

Frequently asked questions

The fan runs first and the burner lights after, so cold air means something stopped it in between. The common causes are low 12V battery voltage, a stuck sail switch, a bad limit switch, an igniter or control board problem, or not enough propane reaching the furnace. We test each one to find which it is.

Sitting is the usual reason. Wasps and mud daubers build nests in the burner tube and exhaust, dust gets into the sail switch, and the batteries run low. Any one of those keeps it from lighting. It is a good idea to have the furnace checked before the first cold night, not during it.

Down to about 40 degrees outside. Below that it cannot pull enough heat from the air, and the furnace should take over. If your heat pump will not heat on a mild day, something is wrong with it, and we can find out what.

A dusty burning smell for the first few minutes of the season is dust burning off, and it should clear quickly. A smell of rotten eggs is propane. If you smell that, turn off the propane at the tank, get everyone out, open the door, and call. We leak test every propane system we work on.

It depends on whether you are using it or parking it. If it is parked, the water system gets drained and protected so a hard freeze cannot crack a line or the water heater tank. If you are using it, we test the furnace, check the tank heaters and heat tape, and make sure the batteries can run the furnace all night. Either way we look at the roof and seals before the winter rain. Call before the first freeze and we will get it winter ready.

Yes. Propane and electric water heaters that will not light, will not stay lit, or run out of hot water fast. That work is on our plumbing and water system page.

Yes. We are fully mobile and do furnace work where the RV is parked, in The Woodlands, Conroe, Magnolia, Spring, Montgomery, and Tomball. The RV does not have to go anywhere.

Other work we do

Most RV problems do not stay in one system. If what you are dealing with is not on this page, it is probably on one of these.
